The ABC reported that a Sydney man was charged with stalk/intimidate with the intent to cause fear, trespass and common assault after he allegedly broke into the ABC Sydney studios, grabbed and assaulted presenter Genevieve Fricker.

Kissing someone can be romantic, passionate, affectionate, sexual and loving. Assaulting someone is none of those things and is in fact a crime. These are not words that can be used interchangeably.

It’s both abhorrent  and inaccurate when news outlets describe an alleged assault using language that indicates romance, but it’s even more staggering when they do it about one of their own staff members. Genevieve Fricker is not alleging the man kissed her, she is alleging that he assaulted her and she should at the very least be able to rely on her employer to understand her allegations as a claim of violence.
