Mamamia published a report about Orsolya Gaal, who was killed ten days ago in New York. Police have charged 44-year-old David Bonola with her murder.
There’s nothing subtle about claiming Orsolya had an affair in the first sentence of a headline about the man who allegedly murdered her. It’s straight up victim blaming.
From their website: “Mamamia is a women’s media company with a purpose: to make the world a better place for women and girls.”
Headlining an article about a man allegedly killing a woman with a claim about her sexual history is not making the world a better place for women and girls. It is perpetuating everything that is dangerous, ignorant, and wrong with media reporting on men’s violence against women. That it comes from a publication claiming to advocate for women and girls only makes this dereliction even more egregious.
