The ABC published an article about the new consent education classes in QLD. The formula for news articles about men’s violence against women is put a survivor story at the top of the article so people can understand that men’s violence against women and children is a bad thing.
This article led with a story from Alya*, who, when she was 12 years old, had an alleged friend send her sexually explicit images without her consent. Someone then made the inexplicable decision to promote a story about consent education with this sentence. Someone wrote it, someone edited it, someone may have even proofread it, and then someone chose to use it as the head sentence on the article.
There is a Yiddish word, “fatootsed” which, according to the Jewish-English Lexicon has three meanings:
- adj. Bewildered, disoriented, discombobulated.
- adj. Distracted, frustrated (New York Stagehand Glossary).
- adj. Enervated, played out, knackered, terminally fatigued.
I am fatootsed.
