9News reported that ex police officer Vaughan Mark Hildebrand was sentenced to 20 years’ jail with a non-parole period of 15 years after his conviction on 11 counts of rape (called sexual intercourse without consent in the legislation), 10 counts of using a carriage service to menace or harass and one of using the same to solicit child pornography.

The headline described these crimes as “elaborate deception”.

Elaborate deception? Did he convince people that children protecting the future of their planet are wasting time better spent learning to judge each other in church? Did he manipulate a nation into believing poverty is caused by laziness and must therefore be punished by raising the barriers to escaping it? Did he demand tithes from people indoctrinated from childhood to believe invisible sky-beings will punish them for human failings? These are elaborate deceptions. Rape, abuse and exploitation of women and children are crimes.

Euphemisms for violence and abuse implicitly diminish the deliberate choice to commit violence and the devastating effect it has on victims.

Words are powerful and they matter. Use them properly.
